WSKW’s online journal consists of (a) peer-reviewed scholarly papers based on original research (experimental, qualitative, descriptive, and historical), and (b) the WSKW Chronicles which include post-conference materials: Young Scholar Papers, John Massengale Papers, and presentation abstracts.
Submissions should be sent by email to: Dr. Jeff Bernard, Editor. The email should make clear that the paper has not been published elsewhere and will not be submitted to another journal until a decision is made regarding its publication in the Journal of Kinesiology and Wellness. In addition, the email should specify the type of submission:
- Research Article (peer-reviewed)
- Post-Conference Young Scholar Paper (peer-reviewed)
- Post-conference Massengale Paper (non-peer reviewed)
Formatting guidelines for all manuscripts
- Microsoft Word submission
- Follow APA style, current edition
- Settings: All margins set to one-inch; 11-point font size; Cambria font; 1.5 line spacing
- Insert page numbers lower right-hand corner; insert continuous line numbers; no headers or footers
- Indent each paragraph; 1.5 spacing (6 pt) after each paragraph
- Headings: Title (14-point; centered, all caps, bold); Abstract (centered, bold); Major headings (centered, all caps, bold)
- Indicate placement of tables, figures, or graphs within the manuscript (i.e., [insert Table 1])
Submitted manuscripts will be subject to a blind peer review. Papers for consideration should not have been published elsewhere. WSKW Membership is not required. As part of the peer review, the following areas will be evaluated: (a) original contribution, (b) clear purpose, (c) clear methodology or logical arguments, (d) sound data analyses or supported arguments, (e) conclusion and implications, (f) accurate grammar, tone, use of English, (g) sound writing (sentence/paragraph structure), (h) use of current APA Style, and (i) relevance of tables and/or figures.
Separate Cover Page: (1) Title of paper, (2) Name of Author(s) and order of contribution, (2) Author(s) affiliation, (3) Date of submission, (4) Author contact information (Name, address, phone, e-mail), and (5) Statement that indicates the research is original and the paper has not been published elsewhere. Published abstracts are excluded.
Manuscript: (1) Title of paper (no authors listed), (2) Abstract (250 words or less), (3) Main heading order: Introduction; Methods or headings to fit a descriptive-type paper; Results or headings to fit a descriptive type paper; Discussion; Conclusion, (4) References, and (5) Tables/Figures if applicable.
Length: 15-20 pages, excluding references, tables, graphs, or figures.
Young Scholar Award Papers
The G. Arthur Broten Young Scholar Papers are manuscripts from faculty who have received WSKW’s young scholar award. The award recognizes full-time professionals from a related field of kinesiology and wellness at the college or university level who are not yet tenured, are engaged professionally, and show promise in the area of scholarship/research. Topics may be chosen from any area within the field of kinesiology and wellness. Research reports, position papers, philosophical statements, or summary of a contemporary issue may serve as the basis for scholarly papers. Following presentation of their work at the WSKW annual conference, award winners are invited to submit their paper for review to the editor of the Journal of Kinesiology and Wellness. Evaluations of the Arthur Broten Young Scholar Papers are based upon scholarly content, organization, and pertinence to the profession.
Separate Cover Page: (1) Title of paper, (2) Name of Author, (3) Author affiliation, (4) Date of submission, Author contact information (Name, address, phone, e-mail), and (5) Statement that indicates the research is original, the paper has not been published elsewhere (published abstracts are excluded), and the author is a non-tenured faculty member at the stated institution.
Manuscript: (1) Title (no author name or affiliation), (2) Abstract (250 words max), and (3) Headings – order and headings for a data-driven manuscript: (a) Introduction, (b) Methodology, (c) Results, (d) Conclusions/ Implications, and (e) References; order and headings for a non-data-driven manuscript: (a) Introduction, (b) Relevant headings that reflect the paper, (c) Conclusions/ Implications, and (d) References.
Figures and/or graphs should appear in the body of the paper.
Manuscript Length: Brief (5-8 pages) or full length articles 15-20 pages excluding references, table, figures, and graphs are accepted.
Deadline: Post-conference Young Scholar Papers must be received by March 31st to be considered.
John Massengale Papers
Formally known as the Western Society Review Papers, the John Massengale Papers are so named to reflect the outstanding contributions Dr. Massengale made to the WSKW organization. The John Massengale Papers are ONLY reserved for those professionals who presented at the previous WSKW conference. The papers are designed to provide additional information from WSKW sessions, such as oral presentations, round table or panel sessions, and poster contributions (professionals and graduate students).
Manuscript: (1) Title of paper, (2) Name of Author(s) and school affiliation(s), (3) Abstract (max 250 words max), (4) Main heading order: Introduction; Relevant headings that reflect the paper; Conclusions/ Implications; References, and (5) Relevant tables and/or figures if needed.
Length: 5-8 pages in length excluding abstract, references and tables or figures.
Deadline: Post-conference John Massengale Papers must be received by March 31st to be considered.
